My name is Marina and together we can create a space for promoting mental health.
Living in a society that constantly challenges our lives, relationships, work, personal development, and relationship with ourselves, it's only natural to experience increasing pressure. Especially if we are a bit 'different'. Even if it sometimes seems frightening, as humans we have countless possibilities to interact with and transform our environment. The therapeutic path helps us discover some of these possibilities.
My driving force is my curiosity about human 'nature' and my interest in people's stories. I deeply believe in the power of change and I am here to encourage you to make it happen.
Born in Drama, but raised in various cities, I developed a curiosity to meet new people and try to understand what I don’t understand. Although I was marginalized in my early school years, through my teenage friendships I discovered my ability to listen deeply and with understanding. That’s how I decided to pursue psychology.
I studied at the Department of Psychology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. My interest turned to the field of social psychology, and I conducted my thesis research on collective actions and youth movements. I completed my two-month internship at the Self-Help Promotion Program, and then proceeded with the annual practical and theoretical training in addictions offered by this program.
At the same time, I focused on the community application of mental health services and enrolled in the postgraduate program 'Public Health and Health Policy' at the Medical School of AUTH. I completed the master's degree by conducting my thesis on mapping the mental health system in Greece, filling the gap in the official recording of mental health services in our country.
Subsequently, I attended the master's program in 'Social Psychology - Research Methods and Applications in the Community', which crowned my previous knowledge, this time emphasizing marginalized social groups. During my internship, I conducted two research projects on children's sleep routines and special therapy services in our country, while as part of Erasmus+ I dealt with the application of machine learning to social psychological data. My thesis was about violence against minors and specifically how children belonging to minority social groups are treated. From time to time, I have participated as an assistant in research conducted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
My presence for a total of one and a half years at the Self-Help Promotion Program offered me enormous resources in approaching the beneficiary, creating a safe space, the therapeutic function of groups, and generally in the attitude towards the person seeking help, inside and outside the context of rehabilitation.
I then worked as a community psychologist in the TEBA program of the Municipality of Drama, offering psychological services to beneficiaries with great financial difficulties. The services included individual counseling, support groups, and community awareness and prevention actions, within the framework of an interdisciplinary team. The main request of the participants was stress management.
After the completion of this program, I participated as a collaborator in a Special Therapies Center. There, for almost 4 years, I provided family counseling and parent counseling services, individual and group psychoeducation to children and adolescents, and parent support groups. The population I worked with is mainly families with children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ASD, ADHD, etc. In addition to neurodivergent children, requests came to my office for managing anxiety and childhood fears, dealing with school bullying, issues of self-esteem, relationships with parents and peers, etc. Parents, on the other hand, usually sought help for issues of setting boundaries and communication, and for support in managing everyday life problems.
Currently, I work as a private practitioner, offering individual and group counseling services via the internet, while simultaneously organizing small seminars on topics in my field. Detailed information about the services can be found here.
In addition to the training in 'Critical approaches in the field of addictions' from the Self-Help Promotion Program, I have attended the educational program 'Effective Parent Training' from Gordon Hellas, and 'Psychotherapy of Social and Emotional Development in Autism Spectrum Disorders of Medium and High functionality' from the Child and Adolescent Center.
I have also attended a multitude of seminars on topics of child psychology, counseling, play therapy, as well as on themes for people belonging to marginalized social groups.
I am currently training in Systemic Therapy to acquire the title of Systemic Therapist, a title recognized by the European Family Therapists Association (E.F.T.A.).
The way I approach people who turn to me for help passes first of all through empathy, acceptance, and belief in change.
My approach reflects the principles of Systems Theory and community psychology, treating each person not as an individuality, but holistically, as a member of the contexts in which they live, interact, and communicate. I try in the session to emphasize the capabilities and resources that each person has, so that we don't just reproduce narratives about problems and deficits, which function in a frustrating and deterrent way.
My collaboration with people experiencing exclusion includes empowering them and encouraging them to gain a voice and make changes. The experience I have from my collaboration with autistic individuals has cultivated my interest in delving into the literature of accepting neurodiversity, against dominant approaches that try to 'fix' the different, regardless of whether it causes a problem for the individuals themselves.
Finally, in parent counseling, I attempt not just to instill general pedagogical knowledge, which one could find in any book, but to understand in depth what works and what makes each family difficult, according to its own characteristics and the relationships of its members. I want to empower parents who question their abilities and focus on developing communication channels between themselves, their children, and their partners.
